Timing is at the heart of every rundown. Fabl automatically calculates your total running time as you add and adjust segments, so you always know whether your show fits the clock — without manual math. Each segment carries its own duration, type, notes, and optional cue points, giving every member of your team the detail they need at a glance.Documentation Index

How Automatic Timing Works
Every time you set or change a segment’s duration, Fabl recalculates the total running time displayed in the rundown header. A running clock next to each segment shows its start time relative to the show’s beginning, so your director and talent can orient themselves at any point in the rundown. If your total running time exceeds your target duration, Fabl highlights the overage in the header so you can make adjustments before production begins.Timing updates happen automatically and instantly — every collaborator viewing the rundown sees the updated totals the moment you change a duration. There is no need to refresh the page or manually recalculate.
Segment Types
Fabl provides six built-in segment types that color-code your rundown and make the show structure scannable at a glance:| Type | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Intro | Opening sequences, cold opens, title cards |
| Segment | Main content blocks — interviews, features, demos |
| Break | Buffer time or unscripted transitions between blocks |
| Outro | Closing remarks, credits, end cards |
| Ad | Paid advertising slots or sponsor reads |
| Custom | Any segment outside standard categories; freely labeled |
Add and Configure a Segment
Insert a new segment
Inside an open rundown, click + Add Segment at the bottom of the segment list, or hover between two existing segments and click the + icon that appears to insert a segment at that position.
Set the segment title and type
Click into the Title field and type a descriptive name for the segment. Then open the Type dropdown and select the segment type that best matches the content. The row will take on the color associated with that type, making the rundown easier to scan.
Enter the duration
Click the Duration field and enter the planned running time in
MM:SS format — for example, 03:30 for three and a half minutes. Fabl immediately adds this value to the total running time at the top of the rundown and updates the start times for all subsequent segments.Add production notes
Click the Notes field on the segment row to open the notes panel. Enter any information the crew needs for that segment — talking points, technical instructions, guest details, or script references. Notes are visible to all collaborators and included in PDF and print exports.
Add cue points
Within the notes panel, click + Add Cue Point to insert a timed marker inside the segment. Enter the cue label (e.g., “Lower third in,” “B-roll out,” “Music fade”) and the offset time from the segment’s start. Cue points help your technical director and operators anticipate actions during playback.
Link a shot list (optional)
To connect a shot list to the segment, click the Shot List icon on the segment row and select an existing shot list from your project, or create a new one inline. Linked shot lists are accessible directly from the rundown, so your camera team can reference them without switching tools.
